The Eagles of Conowingo Dam

Conowingo Dam is a large hydroelectric plant located on the lower Susquehanna River in Maryland. The dam creates a 9,000 acre reservoir that now covers the historic town of Conowingo. Construction of the dam began in 1926 and finished in 1928. The dam houses 11 turbines, seven 36 megawatt and four larger 65 megawatt generators. The hydroelectric facility is currently operated by Constellation Energy.

The turbines stun and kill fish swimming downriver, which pass through the dam and provide a rich food source for cormorants and eagles. From November through January hundreds of eagles migrate from northern areas as winter approaches, taking up temporary residence and feeding on this abundant food source. The eagles in turn attract tens to hundreds of wildlife photographers to observe and photograph the birds fishing, and subsequent food fights, as rival eagles try and steal the captured prey.
